If mono is the fix you need, open the track toolbar by clicking on the title of the track, then click âSplit Stereo to Mono.â You will now have two separate mono tracks: one with all the audio and the other blank. Mono and stereo tracks co-exist in Audacity with no problem and the two together will mix together with correct sound positioning. Note that just because you now have a mono track, doesnât mean the whole project has to be mono. They sound unprofessional when the audio is unbalanced. Itâs perfect for YouTube monologues and the like. On a properly functioning stereo system, a mono sound source will always be perfectly centered. It was designed around using one speaker, and thatâs it. Mono doesnât have any spatial positioning. Itâs still used for many tasks today, particularly in the recording industry. Some people think mono means low quality, but mono can have exactly the same quality as stereo or surround. If your audio stream is only playing down one channel, it was probably already mono anyway but has been badly shoehorned into stereo. If you just spat your coffee out at that suggestion, mono is greatly misunderstood and extremely useful. Solve this by converting the track into mono. If you drag it all the way to the other side, the sound simply disappears. Dragging the slider wonât reposition the audio. However, if your audio is all the way to one side with absolutely no audio through the other channel, adjusting the pan wonât work.

And there are times when we’re opposing the plans of God, to be sure. There are times when we are opposed by the Devil, certainly. We shouldn’t assume that inner conflict is often “a confirmation of your calling the enemy only fights those who pose a threat” (Kindle location 2818), or that if you “haven’t had a head-on collision with the Devil lately, it may be because you’re running in the same direction” (Kindle location 2820). Moreover, while I certainly don’t want to ignore the schemes of the Devil, we should recognize that not every negative situation or accusation arises from demonic machinations. It’s as though he’s preemptively saying to his critics, “God called me to do this you can’t argue with these results.” He boasts of “more than one hundred teenagers public declarations of faith in Christ” at a teenager’s funeral where he preached (Kindle location 1350) and of how, after giving a moving eulogy for his father, who died of ALS, $61,000 was pledged in his honor (Kindle location 2730). It’s only natural, then, that his book would have an element of defensiveness, even as he tells us we need not fear such things.įurtick emphasizes his personal call from God, “whispered” directly to him, that together he and God are going to take Charlotte for God’s glory (Kindle location 195). “Don’t put salt in your eye,” “Don’t walk in front of a bus,” and “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3) are negative thoughts, after all, but they’re also good for us. But Crash the Chatterbox lacks a nuanced view of negative thoughts-that while some are destructive, others are actually good for us. We can all agree, I think, about a kind of negativity that’s detrimental to our health and well-being. Crash the Chatterbox is built on a shaky foundation, namely the claim that of the allegedly 80,000 thoughts we have each day, roughly 80 percent are negative. I’ll limit myself to four significant errors I see in this book.ġ. And the details, I’m afraid, spoil Crash the Chatterbox. What God says I can do-or, more correctly, what he’s empowered me to do through the Holy Spirit-is more important than what others think I can do.īut the devil, as they say, is in the details. What God says he will do and what God has already done is more than enough to overcome my fears. What matters isn’t what I, or others, think about me but what God says about me. Taken on their own, these confessions (or, more accurately, declarations) are actually pretty helpful. “So by filling our spiritual ears with these four declarations of truth, we receive and respond to what God says about who he is and who we are in him” (Kindle location 371). “These are truths about God and truths about you that come straight from God’s Word,” Furtick writes. Overpowering the lies of the enemy in your discouragement. Overpowering the lies of the enemy in your condemnation. Overpowering the lies of the enemy in your fears. Overpowering the lies of the enemy in your insecurities. Furtick builds his argument, or rather his counterargument to the lies we believe, around four “confessions”: We read through those filters, an appropriate observation considering the central purpose of Crash the Chatterbox-to help readers hear God’s voice above all the competing negative voices around and, most of all, inside of us.įirst, let’s talk about the good of this book. We approach books with our opinions of the author in place, and tend to look to confirm our biases. Which, I suppose, is part of the problem. How do I write a review that isn’t kinder than the book warrants, but also can’t be easily brushed off by the author’s fan base with a “haters gonna hate”? Do you know what’s incredibly challenging? Trying to write anything that resembles a balanced review of Crash the Chatterbox: Hearing God’s Voice Above All Others, the latest book by Steven Furtick, pastor of Elevation Church in Charlotte. In 2019 she co-starred with Idris Elba in the Netflix comedy Turn Up Charlie, and has moved onto a recurring role on Showtime's Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Perabo filled the ensuing decade with films in a variety of genres, including the family-friendly hit Cheaper by the Dozen (and its sequel), horror thriller The Cave, rom-com Imagine Me & You, the haunting Christopher Nolan drama The Prestige, and the sci-fi action movie Looper. The longtime political activist played a CIA agent on the USA drama Covert Affairs for five seasons, earning a Golden Globe nomination in 2011. The Ohio University grad broke out of the acting pack as Violet, an aspiring singer who leaves home in New Jersey for the wilds of New York to pursue her dreams-and who gets a "second audition" to be a Coyote Ugly bartender after she impressively diffuses simmering tensions between two rowdy patrons. Like 2019's Hustlers(minus the criminal enterprise), Coyote Ugly was inspired by a 1997 article in GQwritten by Elizabeth Gilbert ( Eat, Pray, Love) about her experience as a bartender at the famously hands-on drinking establishment. Though it was largely filmed on sets in L.A., the bar in the movie is based on a real-life chain of saloons, starting with the flagship Coyote Ugly in New York City that was opened by NYU alum Liliana Lovell, who followed her heart into bartending rather than take a job on Wall Street. It's been 22 years since the romantic dramedy full of dancing, singing, high-heeled boots and bellybuttons hit theaters, making bar-top dancing and wielding a water gun like it's high noon in the desert look like the most fun you can possibly have at a job, so long as you've got your girls by your side and a plan that doesn't involve warding off drunken frat brothers forever. "Coyote Ugly," and its soundtrack album, were surprise hits, and helped turn Perabo and Rimes into stars. Rimes had released a few albums by that point, but her success had been limited to the country-music scene. Prior to getting the film's lead role, Perabo's biggest role was a supporting turn in the live-action "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle" earlier in 2000, which would have provided a bigger boost to her career had anybody bothered to see it. The film helped to launch both young artists to stardom. "When they finished the film, they felt like my voice isn't really the right type of voice for the character." "My real singing voice is low, and LeAnn has this kind of big, belter, soprano voice," Perabo said in an interview with pop-culture website Radio Free Entertainment. Though Piper Perabo reportedly has a fairly good set of pipes, the producers nonetheless brought in a ringer for her role in the 2000 sleeper hit, "Coyote Ugly."Īll of the songs Perabo's character performs in the film, about a shy young songwriter who moves to New York to chase her dream and finds it while working at a wild, women-run bar, were performed by country-pop star LeAnn Rimes. There is a certain duality in the unknown, perhaps best represented by the shadow in art. With its dark nature, shadow has been infallibly tied to the ignorance and fear of the unknown, as the ever shifting edges of a familiar object or person hold something we cannot perceive. Even the elusive, indeterminable shadow itself is heavy with meaning, not just in art but in life as well. Although these notions are in the base of all works of shadow art, the artists creating these types of artwork see it as more than just shedding light onto objects, and there’s usually a higher meaning lying in the art piece. Drawing lines out of the insubstantial, creating forms out of something that isn’t there. If art can be defined as creating visual or auditory elements that express the author’s imaginative or technical skill, then shadow art represents those skills in play with shadows. Left: Kumi Yamashita - Clouds, 2005 Right: Kumi Yamashita - Question Mark, 2003. Today, we will try to prove those of you wrong, and show you some amazing, mind-boggling even, works of shadow art, tell you how it’s doing on the current market, and validate it as more than just a Pinterest sub-category. Most of us have seen or heard of “someone” making “something” cool out of shadows, but it’s usually instantly tied to people goofing around with their fingers around a lamp, making shadows of rabbits and donkeys on the wall. Though it can be said that shadow gave birth to art, saying that art gave birth to shadow (art) is unconventional, not because the notion of it is unthinkable but simply because there isn’t much of it out there, compared to other art styles and how popular and spread they’ve become. Much like her lover’s outline, art was born from the desire to give substance to that which is incorporeal, to make permanent that which is fading. According to an ancient Roman author, Pliny the Elder, the very art of painting originates from trailing the edge of shadow, as a maid of Corinth traced her lover’s shadow on a wall. For English users, it’s mainly anything tagged as a non-Latin font. This list changes depending on your region. But that is the story I’ve read for their reason to exist. What support is that? Good question, because I don’t know either. Apple considers them useful only as backward compatibility document support. From what I’ve been able to find on the subject, it comes down to this: All of the extra fonts included with the OS over the decades, not used for the GUI itself, have never been there for the user. It does no good to call or write Apple about it since they won’t answer such questions. You may wonder why since you’re not trying to delete them from the drive, just disabling the ones you don’t need. Thoughts and suggestions on what to do regarding the System fonts in Ventura (and probably from here on):Īpple cut off access to handling even the Supplemental fonts in Ventura. It was time to move that data to an older, static page. We’re three versions of macOS in now from Catalina. Anywhere it says a font manager can disable the Supplemental fonts is true for Monterey or earlier, but not for Ventura, and very likely any OS to come after it.Ĭutting everything off at Big Sur also allowed me to eliminate full sections that were completely obsolete for that OS and later. The main can/can’t issue now is the font manager reviews in section 12. But at least it’s still much less of a mess. Now we’re back to a can/can’t issue anyway. Or, at least I thought it would until discovering Ventura blocks you from disabling fonts in the Supplemental folder. That eliminated virtually all of the can/can’t situations. My goal then was to use Big Sur as the new starting point as it’s the first OS version where the user could no longer remove any fonts installed by the OS. It becomes difficult to keep so many straight. Why the extensive rewrite of this article?Īs with the previous cutoff, it had simply become too long and a mess of, “you can do xxx under this OS, but not this one”. I use them interchangeably throughout this article. The following words: program, application or app all have the same meaning. Users/ your_user_account /Library/Fonts/. Which, if you start by double clicking the icon of the boot drive on the desktop, the path can also be presented as So in most cases, the path to the Fonts folder in your home user account would be ~/Library/Fonts/. ~/ The tilde-forward slash pair is always your home directory (folder), i.e., the home folder of the current user login session. The beginning forward slash (as in the example to the Terminal application) of a file specification is always the root level of your boot volume. This is known as a hierarchical file specification in geek terminology, but it’s called a canonical filename for short. For example, here is the file specification for the Terminal application: I can’t tell you exactly what the path to your home account looks like (since I don’t know your short user name), so here are some handy notes of reference.Ī file specification is the entire path from the root of the volume it resides on to the end of the file name. This should help novice computer users and those unfamiliar with standard notation to learn how to navigate to the folders mentioned throughout this article. By ’notation’ I am referring to the path name. I first want to mention the notation of file locations. So if you’d like to contribute anything, please visit my GoFundMe page. This article will benefit prepress operators and graphic designers the most, but can clear up font issues for most general users as well. The idea is to keep your font list as small as possible to avoid font conflicts (font conflicts are explained in Section 9). If chat group members go offline, they see any new messages the next time they're online. You can include photos inline in chats, but I still find the emoticon selection lacking compared with Facebook Messenger and the stickers in WhatsApp. Starting a chat session with either one or multiple users is now possible from any page of the main interface (Recent, Favorites, or People). It's hard to believe the iPhone Skype app didn't have group messaging before this update. After a Skype call, the app asks you to rate its quality, so any problems are reported to the company. It's not quite as sharp as Apple's FaceTime, but the difference is slight, and FaceTime requires that both parties have Apple equipment. And video, though highly bandwidth dependent, looks reasonably clear, even over mobile connections. I found in my testing (and regularly find in my frequent personal usage) that Skype's voice quality is actually superior to what I've often gotten on a mobile call. I made test calls in the app from New York to the West Coast and to Japan. I can sum up call quality in Skype pretty quickly: It's been in the lead for years, and just seems to keep getting better. The last is a separate app that lets you use your Skype Credit to pay by the minute for access via millions of public hotspots (Opens in a new window), such as those Boingo hotspots you find at airports. Nor do you see the status of voice messages, call forwarding, or Skype Wi-Fi. For example, there are no longer entries for your Skype Number (the number that people can use to call you from standard phones). The design of the Profile page is more pleasing and cleaner than in the older version, but it doesn't include a couple of helpful entries that were formerly present. Sitting steadily at the bottom of all these screens are two buttons-one for the dial pad and one for chat. If you need to find someone from your list of contacts, People is the place, and Favorites offers large tiles for easy access to the most important people in your world. Now they slide back and forth smoothly and naturally. Navigation between each section is more elegant than in the previous version, which snapped from view to view with no visual transition. I usually leave the app on the Recent view, since that's where I can keep up with ongoing interactions. Instead, you swipe through three main views to start communicating-People, Recent, and Favorites-or check out your own profile page from its icon at top right. The newly redesigned Skype app for iPhone supports most (though not all) of the service's capabilities in a highly usable, intuitive design.Īs with the previous Skype iPhone app, there's no true home page. You can even get an incoming phone number through Skype that works with standard mobiles and landlines. Maybe that explains why the service recently passed two billion talk minutes a day among its 300-million-plus users. Skype is also available for any platform you can think of: Android, Blackberry, iOS, Linux, Mac, Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox, and many smart TVs. Though it's mostly associated with free peer-to-peer video calling, Skype also offers voice calls to regular phone numbers (including mobiles and landlines) as well as to other Skype users, group calling, group video, video and voice messaging, text chatting with file exchange, SMS out, screen sharing…the list goes on. Plenty of other services such as Tango, Viber, and even Facebook Messenger-have some of Skype's capabilities, but none offers as complete a package. There's really no single communication service that offers everything Skype does. The new version adds not only a fresh look, but also faster performance, easier group chatting, and better notification control. Though it's had interim releases, it hasn't been truly redesigned since the days of iOS 4. The iPhone Skype app (free) was long overdue for an update.
